Frequently Asked Questions
What is Math Buddies?
We understand that online learning is not the same as physical classroom learning. Math Buddies is a free program to help Staten Island elementary school and middle school students with online math learning. 5th-8th grade volunteer mentors will work one on one online with their 3rd-8th grade mentees to help them with their math needs.
How can I be a mentor?
If you would like to help other students, sign up as a mentor. Staten Island Math Club members are eligible to be a mentor.
If you already have a mentee, let us know. We will match you with a mentee if you don't have one.
Mentors are expected to be present at meetings with and effectively communicate with their mentee. They should conduct themselves as if they are in a classroom environment in a polite and respectful manner and extend their best effort to helping their mentee.
How can I be a mentee?
If you think that you need help with some math topics, sign up to be a mentee. Tell us your needs and we will match you with a mentor.
If your math teacher recommends you to join Math Buddies, sign up and we will help you.
Mentees are expected to be present at meetings with and effectively communicate with their mentor. They should conduct themselves as if they are in a classroom environment in a polite and respectful manner and be attentive listeners.
When will I hear from Staten Island Math Club after I sign up Math Buddies?
After we receive the signed form from you and your parents, we will match you with a mentor/mentee. Mentors will then contact mentees by email to schedule meetings.
How often and when will I meet my mentor/mentee online?
Mentors and mentees will meet once or twice a week at a convenient time.
Do I need to report my progress?
Yes. Mentors and mentees will fill out a biweekly report form to report your progress.
